HIAA: Past & Present
About the HIAA Founded in the fall of 2005, the Harvard College Italian American Association (HIAA) provides a forum for Italian-American students and those interested in the Italian-American culture to engage in the heritage through various social and academic events.
According to the 2000 National Census, Italian Americans constitute the seventh largest ethnic group in the United States with roughly 15.6 million people. From the discovery of the New World to the building of our national infrastructure to the selfless protection of the American democracy in various wars, Americans of Italian descent have a rich legacy in this country and a unique history largely defined by Old World traditions and the immigrant struggle.
Today, Italian Americans are noted as a people committed to family, hard work, patriotism, and cultural traditions. The struggle for today’s Italian American community is in reality that of previous generations: to preserve and promote our rich heritage, combat negative stereotypes, and make great strides forward without forgetting from where we have come. Bocce tournaments, North End excursions, author panels, and Italy-US political discussions are only a handful of the many events the HIAA hosts throughout the year. The HIAA also produces an annual journal featuring the most recent research on Italian-American literature and culture along with introspective articles on the Italian-American heritage.
Join the HIAA and be a part of our family.

Raised to speak both Italian and English, and studied Italian throughout high school and college. Member of the HIAA since freshman year. Very interested in promoting the Italian language/culture and fostering a sense of community for it at Harvard. Fun facts: neither studied Italian nor is Italian by blood, but IS Italian at heart. Sets the social scene for HIAA events and contributes to event publicity and prospective student recruitment. Gli Azzuri is not Brett's favorite team, but rather the Cleveland Indians of good ole' baseball. You get the idea.

Italian Speakers- Contracted Linguist, $25/hr!
-Position available: Contracted Linguist: Contracted Linguist
-Information: Due to the growing need for individuals that are fluent in both English and Italian we are hoping that you would be able to refer someone interested in joining our team and assisting other members of the community as a Contracted Linguist. This is a paid position typically starting at $25.00/hr with a 2 hour minimum. This rate may be higher for those that already have experience or are certified interpreters. There is no time commitment; when the hospitals contact us and express a need for interpreters we would then refer to our database and if an interpreter is available then we would schedule them, if not we would move onto the next person on our list. Any help that could be provided would be greatly appreciated, native Italian speakers are preferred and those that are interested must be familiar with medical terminology in both Italian and English.
-Company: American Translation Partners, Inc. (ATP). ATP provides local area hospitals with interpreters to assist with non-English speaking patients. We cover many of the local hospitals in the Boston area such as Children's Hospital and Mass Eye and Ear as well some of the other hospitals outside of Boston like the Lahey Clinic.
